The Art of Being Still Cristy Lee McGeehan It’s hard to believe January is almost over (almost as hard as believing it’s 2025!). We’ve started our new year in stark contrast to how we ended it, which has the net result of making us feel balanced (yeah, riiiight). The end of 2024 saw us rooted down, nomad-style, for two months in the Florida Keys. At first, I was worried being still that long would feel like a punishment, like we were actively choosing to miss out on exploration and highlight-reel-worthy life experiences. It turns out I was wrong (it happens often in this life, though never in matters with my husband, ahem). Taking a breather and just being somewhere for a while was exactly what we needed, and I’m growing increasingly grateful for it each day. Thanks to our penchant for the ridiculous, there’s been no easing back into life on the road for Colan and me. It’s been jarring, leaving perpetually warm weather for Texas's uncharacteristically cold...

A Quiet Park | Best of National Parks Cristy Lee McGeehan Exploring National Parks has to be at the top of our evergrowing list of things we love about nomadic living (probably more crowded up there than the summit of Everest). As of 2024, there are 63 designated National Parks in the United States, and our appetite for devouring them becomes more insatiable with each park visited. I’ve lost count of how many we’ve been to, but we’ll have visited roughly half by year’s end. The two most recent, Big Bend National Park at the Texas/Mexico border and White Sands National Park in New Mexico, have stolen our hearts completely. I’d split my time living in the two if it wouldn’t get me arrested. (I’m a tough broad, but federal prison is not on my bucket list, thank you very much.) Visiting Big Bend NP and White Sands NP back-to-back was one of the most centering, invigorating ways to start the new year. Just perfect. National Parks offer modern-day explorers a profound connection to nat...

A Cactus Collective | Best of National Parks Cristy Lee McGeehan National Parks have quickly become the backbone of our new life— they are our nomadic True North. (Yes, I realize a “nomadic True North” does no good to anyone, but I’m going to ignore it and suggest you do, too.) While in Tucson, we visited our third for 2025– Saguaro National Park. Truth be told, I assumed it would be a visit-for-the-sake-of-visiting-it’ll-be-a-notch-in-the-old-bedpost (we’re married, that’s the sort of notches we get these days) kinda visit, as the park seemed, online at least, in a word: lame. (Please forgive me, Park Rangers of Saguaro NP, I don’t mean it.) Saguaro NP was, in fact, not “lame” and instead a reminder that all National Parks visited will be making my “Best Of” for one reason or another. (Also, it was a good reminder that assumptions can be lame, and I am lame for mine regarding Saguaro NP.) They’re National Parks for a reason, and Saguaro NP deserves to be on your list just as much as t...
